Sunday, 20 July '08: Hurry Up Fable 2

Ok time for a gaming post as I haven’t done one for a while. Every now and again big promises are made within the gaming world. With an expectation level set by Fable, F2 is number 1 on my can’t wait list, roll on October.

IN BRIEF

Set 500 years after the original game, Fable 2 offers even more choices and features, while building on the core gameplay theme of Fable where every choice continually defines who you become, allowing you to truly live the life you choose.

IN FULL

The world in Fable II will be fully dynamic. For instance, the player will be able to jump over fences and climb certain objects. The player will not be assigned a set path or quest to follow. Since the game will take place over a hero’s lifetime, many things will change; Molyneux gave an example of a trade camp that the player could either help or destroy.

Trading in such camps would increase their profit, resulting in a small town growing around them, while stealing from the camp or massacring the camp will result in the abandonment of the area. Additionally, every accessible property (properties that can be entered by the player) in the world is ownable by the player, often unlocking further content such as quests.

Molyneux also announced that players will be able to purchase furniture and fully customize their houses and property. Titles will be awarded for buying property; if one were to buy every building and piece of land in a town, they may become known as the mayor, king, and eventually emperor of the entire land of Albion.

The environment in Fable II will feature trees with branches and leaves that are individually animated according to their own unique physics, each tree having roughly 120,000 leaves. There are also around 15 million poppies, a common flower, in Albion

Wednesday, 30 January '08: Zack and Wiki

1. All WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES WII A VERY DULL TOY

It has dawned on me that although I’m spending a lot of wii related time, I seem to be neglecting my wii in favor its wiimote. With this in mind it was time for a new game. Ok I admit it I also wanted a game that pushed the wiimote to its functional limits (its nice when you can claim gameplay as research ;) ).

2. ZACK & WIKI: ONE BIG PUZZLE

Zack & Wiki (Z&W) fulfills both needs and both brilliantly to boot. Each level breaks down as a well thought out puzzle containing items, objects and booby-traps.

zandw_1.jpg

Anther nice touch within Z&W is that you don’t really control the main characters but rather guide them, just click on a levels special items, objects and characters and the two hero’s will walk toward and interact with them.

Its that simple… Read..

Whist reviewing my 360 achievements with scotii1982 an interesting issue was highlighted in reference to my age.

Thursday, 15 November '07: Assassins Creed Comparison

With less than 24 hours to the release of my most anticipated game to date (ok, ok one of them). I thought it was time to decide on a platform bearing in mind this also means finally having to succumb to buying a PS3 (gonna happen 1 day) take a look at the following screen shot taken from a video produced by gamesyde.com:

assassins-creed-comp.jpg

Now bearing all this footage in mind computer and video games.com state:

Under a microscope the PS3 version does look a bit sharper when the two versions are running side by side.

However with a little more googling and image study I believe the lighting and color to be better on the 360. If you look at the above you can clearly see the brick definition on the 360 half whilst the PS3 section also looks quite saturated and a bit washy.

Ok I admit you can never trust image comparisons like this due to possible degradation in their production etc, but reviewing lots and lots of video gave me chance to look for subtle things such as alpha texturing and particles used for items such as straw bales etc and in my opinion the 360 is also a winner there. Wednesday, 25 July '07: POP Classic

In brief: Super-smooth animation, classic platform game play, improved controls, and extra game modes.

pop-classic-shadow.png

The changes from the original include:

  • Revamped, updated graphics featuring new character designs, extra animations, better visuals, and added lighting effects in high-definition video.
  • New original fully orchestrated soundtrack (composed by Arnaud Galand)
  • Some of the new animations are in fact new moves, allowing the player to roll, rebound of walls, and climb and descend floors quicker.
  • Some characters are based on their The Sands of Time counterparts, such as the Prince, Princess Farah as the Princess, the Dark Prince as the Mirror Prince, and the Vizier as Jaffar.
  • The inclusion of one checkpoint per level.
  • Full 3D, in-engine cut scenes of important events, such as the freeing of the Dark Prince, the Princess choosing death over marriage (if the timer runs out), and so forth.
  • An optional butterfly that points out correct routes for stuck players.
  • The game can still be finished if the player takes more than 60 minutes in the default mode.
  • Two additional modes: Time Trial (finish the game as quickly as possible) and Survival (only one life, one hour).
  • An optional ghost that allows players to race against themselves from their best time through a single level.
  • Twelve Achievements, most of which unlock during significant events in the story.

Tuesday, 3 July '07: Nintendo to open up Wii console

Home and independent game makers are getting a chance to put together titles for Nintendo’s Wii console.

The hi-tech firm has released a game making tool called WiiWare that gives budding game makers the data they need to use the console and its innovative controller.

Wii owners will be able to download the games through net channels accessible via the console.

Nintendo said the first games would be available for download in early 2008.

Fresh ideas

Anyone wanting to use the WiiWare tool will need a basic knowledge of programming, said Nintendo. It lets people start creating their game on a PC but it must be fine-tuned and finished on the console itself.
The company said it expected game makers to use the Wii’s motion sensitive controller to create “fresh takes on established genres”.

“Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president in a statement.

Once quality tested by Nintendo, games created via the WiiWare service will be put on the Wii Shop channel so owners can download them.

Wii owners must spend points to get the games. Owners buy Wii points by credit card or by purchasing cards in stores.

The move by Nintendo follows a similar initiative by Microsoft. It has made an express version of its XNA game making tools available for students and hobbyists so they can craft titles for the Xbox.

Tuesday, 16 January '07: 100% Pinata

Final Achievement Obtained and the big VP is 100% completed. finally I can commence investigation of the Lost Planet. Cheers to RARE for a totally brilliant game.

Yes I have had a fag to celebrate for I am lame.

With the advent of the Master Horticulturalist achievement I thought it would be a good idea to share a little info on how to actually fertilize them trees to obtain full growth.

Some of you might have noticed Trees develop over 3 stages, completion of each stage is indicated by what I like to call blossoming ( particle explosion of lots of little leaves ). To ensure full growth just apply fertilizer within each stage and the jobs a good un.

I would recommend usage of the Ivor Bargain mix for ease of completion but if you have not got that far into the game try the following:

Plants and their fertilizers

Apple Tree-Red
Banana Tree-Yellow
Bird of Paradise-Orange
Black Berry Bush-Purple
Bluebell-Blue
Bluerush-Brown
Buttercup-Yellow
Carrot-Orange
Chili-Red
Corn-Yellow
Daisy-Yellow
Fir Tree-Brown
Gem Tree-Blue
Gooseberry-Green
Hazel Tree-Brown
Monkey Nut Tree-Brown
Nightshade Tree-Purple
Oak Tree-Green
Orchid-Green
Poppy-Red
Pumpkin-Orange
Snapdragon-Purple
Sunflower-Yellow
Tulip-Purple
Turnip-Purple
Watercress-Green
